PROCRASTINATION IS THE THIEF OF LIFE: Essay

PROCRASTINATION IS THE THIEF OF LIFE

Procrastination means delaying or postponing things. The work that should be done today is postponed for tomorrow. That tomorrow never comes. Take a student. If he postpones his today’s work tomorrow he would be given more work. It would be a burden on him. He won’t be in a position to do two day’s work in one day. He may be punished for it. It would be considered his negligence.

What is true of a student is true of a business too. If a business- man postpones his purchases from the wholesale market or delays in the formation of the infrastructure he would lose in the market. His deify would be the gain of others. Postponing things is like a thief that would steal the very life blood of a business or an industry.

At the administrative level if an officer does not take a quick decision his table would be loaded with a number of files. Those files take a round of four or five ministries. If they remain an every ministry for a week or two it will take a long time to execute a plan. In many cases the postponement goes for years together till a decision is taken. When it is executed it is found that the prices of things to be used go high. Then the decision is to be taken on these raised prices. The vicious circle goes on.

At national level it tells upon the intention of the government. If the government does not want to pass a bill on a certain issue it forms a commission to look into it in details. Sometimes it is handed over to a Parliamentary Committee. It takes months together for these bodies to come to a decision. That is what happened to women’s representation Bill for Parliament and State Assemblies. It has yet to see light of the day. In the same way Liberhan commission heard the case of Babri Masjid Lucknow High Court heard. The proceedings of the same case for years together and could not pass a judgment this delay caused many deaths in the Regime of Mulayam Singh.

The scenario is not different in courts even High Court and Supreme Court. In the case of Musician Gulshan Kumar’s murder after four years of hearing the court set free 15 culprits as the approver on whose statement they were arrested turned hostile (gave statement opposed to the former one). Many murder and dowry death cases continue for such a long time that all the evidence is lost. In civil cases the delay is so much that they continue for decades together. Many judges are transferred during this period and hearing starts from the beginning. In many cases the party dies. It proves that justice delayed is justice lost.

Just the opposite of it has been the case of President George Bush’s (American President) decision to continue the fight against Taliban’s in Afghanistan till they are totally erased. He was successful in turning the Taliban’s and Osama Bin Laden out of Afghanistan. It was the end of terrorism because nothing was postponed.
