INDEPENDENCE DAY

The 15th August 1947 is a red letter day in the history of our country. It is called ‘Independence Day’, because on that day the British rule came to an end in India. So the day is celebrated every year since 1947.

The national tricolour flag was hoisted on the Red Fort for the first time in 1947 when India became free. Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India, hoisted the flag.

Independence Day is celebrated in all the schools also. My school is no exception. On this day, all the students gather in the prayer ground. Principal and teachers also participate in the function. The flag is hoisted by the principal and all of us sing National Anthem. Independence Day was celebrated this year also and a cultural programme followed. Our principal in his speech advised us to be diligent and honest. He said that we should do our duty to the nation. After the national anthem was over, the principal distributed sweets to all the students and teachers.

Early in the morning on that day, the prime minister goes to the Red Fort. He hoists the National Flag and then addresses the large crowd. The National Anthem is sung and a guard of honour is presented by the army, navy, and air force units. Building in old and New Delhi are brightly lit in the evening.

Independence Day is our greatest national festival. All the schools, offices, shops and factories in the country remind closed. People remember those great men who sacrificed their lives fighting the British empire.
