OLYMPICS AND INDIA

Olympics Games are considered to be the greatest sports event of the world. It is held every 4 years. Players and sportsmen of many countries of the world sent their participants to take part in the Olympics. India has also been sending her participants regularly.

The name Olympic has been derived from Mount Olympus; which is in Greece. It is said that Olympic Games previously did not comprise as many games, the events as it is in the present day. Earlier, the games were held every four years but not necessarily at Mount Olympus.

Now many countries of the world are participating through their National Sports Associations which are affiliated to the International Olympic Association. Now both men and women take part in the Olympic Games.

Last Olympic Meet was at Beijing in 2008. There was a record entry of participants. Men and women had entry into numerous events. The competition was very stiff and most standards proved to be high. However, a large number of records were broken and new records established.

India had entered with good preparation. A good size contingent was sent to participate in the games. “Abhnav Bindra” won the first Gold Medal for India in 10 m range air rifle shooting. Not only the Abhinav Bindra but two other Indians Vijendra Singh and Sushil Kumar won two Bronge medals in Boxing and wrestling. This make a hope to see in future of sports.
