English_Master July 8, 2012 No Comments
Plastics are non-biodegradable substances that pose serious threat to our environment when disposed off thoughtlessly. They are basically used for manufacturing goods like toys, utility appliances like buckets, hangers and much more, for packing materials and also for many other construction and industrial processes. They have an advantage of being durable, light weight and economically viable but still, they harm our environment beyond repair. Their disposal is a huge problem as the demand of plastic is increasing with growing population. Since they are non-biodegradable, they cannot be disposed off in the open or in water bodies. Also they cannot be dumped in vermi composts since they cannot be disintegrated. Burning plastics release noxious toxic fumes as a result of which they should not be burnt. Moreover since they contain harmful chemicals, they should not be let to leach into water sources or ground. Some plastics are even non-recyclable which makes poses a greater problem. They can leach into the water sources and contaminate them, choke outlets and thus lead to killing of many animals and plants. When disposed off on land, it affects soil fertility thus affecting the plant and crop growth. They even pollute the air. Thus, steps are being taken to reduce the usage of plastics and...

The Influence of Television on youth

English_Master July 2, 2012 No Comments
The influence of TV on the life of today’s youth is unbeatable. The variety of programs being telecast is it regional or international is mind boggling. Television is an extraordinary medium that brings the entire world into your living room. Its accessibility makes it more powerful-it is there at the touch of a button. It is a 24/7 medium. Its visual impact leaves a lasting impression on the young minds which are susceptible. TV is the windows to their world since magazines or cinema certainly do not exert the same impact as TV on them. The content of TV programs leaves a lot to be desired. Hence to expect it to instill moral, ethical or positive values is asking for too much. It is appalling to note that even gruesome scenes do not elicit much of a response from the young viewers whose mind seems to be attuned to it; having had an overdose of it. Their way of dressing, eating, conversing and even the music they listen to is largely influenced by the English serials and sitcoms and music channels they tend to watch. There is an overdose of violence, sex and glorification of things that appeal to the youth. The content of violence can be influenced by...

Dowry System in India

English_Master July 2, 2012 No Comments
In olden days giving away dowry during marriages was very common. The aristocratic class celebrated their daughters’ marriages in pomp offering by land, jewellery, properties, vehicles and large sums of money to the bridegroom. In these days too the rich in several communities celebrate their daughters’ marriages in a very grand fashion. The Maharajas celebrated the marriages of their daughters by spending lavishly. Ordinary people wonder at the huge amount spent on marriages and the grand feast for thousands and thousands which include the choicest food items and choicest liquor. Wealthy people, Zamindars and princely class can afford to spend on marriages as much as they wish. Unmindful spending in marriages is questionable when most of our people struggle to make both ends meet. To the common man, giving dowry is very problematic. Some of the people in the society are employed in offices or do some petty business. In many families the earning member may be only one. He may get a meager salary and he may not have any savings. He may not have any close relative to help him in needy circumstances. He may have to marry off daughter when he is about to retire or after he retires. His retirement benefits may amount to a...

Cloning – Ethical or Not?

English_Master July 1, 2012 No Comments
Ever since sheep- Dolly was cloned in 1997, a new field of controversy had been flung open-whether this newly acquired technology of cloning is beneficial or detrimental to human race. It was not by accident that Dolly was cloned. It took nearly about 76 nuclear transfer procedures by a Scottish scientist at the Roslin Institute in order to create the first cloned animal ever. The success rate of reproductive cloning still remains doubtful at the present moment because the dangers of reproductive cloning are many. Besides many of the clones thus produced suffer from major abnormalities, for instance, deformation of an organ or its absence. Research has shown that out of all the attempts on reproductive cloning. 90% of them are fail to produce even one viable offspring. Early human cloning experiments are thus at a big stake because they will be more prone to similar abnormalities found in animal clones. These abnormalities found in animal clones.  These abnormalities might result into further medical complications as miscarriages, abortions, birth of offspring with highly deformed organs or abnormal features. Moreover, human cloning is believed to be unethical or immoral. Another impediment that puts a question mark on reproductive cloning is the uncertainty on the kind of mental development, the clone...
