Proverb Expansion UNION IS STRENGTH There were four brothers who would always quarrel. One day their father called them and gave one thin stick to each other one of them to break. All of them broke easily these. The he tied four stick together and asked them to break the tied bundle. None could break the bundle. He advised them to remain united like the sticks to dominate the village. It was because of this unity that the Guptas had a big and noble empire in the north while Chalukyas had a sway over the south. When the Indian princess disunited we were attacked by Muslim invaders from the Middle East for a thousand years. It was again because of disunity that the Britishers ruled us for more than three hundred years. It was disunity among the people that made the country weak. The motherland was divided into units India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Burma. The old Bharat has been a weak country. There are pockets of foreign interests in different states. Labourers are generally poor. But when they unite and form trade unions they become strong. The government and the mill owners have to accept their demands. It is the unity among the players in Hockey, football...

Proverb Expansion PEACE HATH HER VICTORIES NO LESS RENOWNED THAN WAR Winning a war makes a man or a country victorious. History is full of the details of wars won by Roman, British and French kings. The generals became famous. The dictators who were responsible for killing millions of people were adored by the people of their countries. Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin became renowned personalities because they won the II world war. Akbar, Hyder Ali, Tipu Sultan became renowned personalities as they won the wars and established their kingdoms. But these victories are short lived. They remain on the pages of history. They also remain as a bitter wound in the heart of those who are conquered. The victories of science, technology and art that are made during peace time are the real victories. They are victories to keep the cultures alive. They are responsible for the safety of humanity not for genocide. It is during peace that great monuments and temples, pieces of art were built. The whole south from Nagpur to Kanyakumari is rich with this heritage in India. The life saving drugs, the researches in Medical science that give new life to men are the victories during peace time. He would unprepared and would relate many things in the class that had nothing to do with the course. Tired of him students started calling him ‘Ghantoo’. One day hollow bell was drawn on the blackboard. The young teacher reported the manner to the Principal, an Englishman. He called the two students who were considered responsible for the mischief. The Principal asked them what is meant by ‘Ghantoo’. They knew they were to be rusticated. So one of them said, ‘sir, is a big hollow thing that makes much noise’. The Principal sent them out and told the teacher that his students were quite witty. The lecture remained unpopular throughout his career. A learned man filled with knowledge to the brim would always talk sensible things. He has not to show himself off. To deliver even one lecture he would fill his mental cup to the brim. What he speaks is not mere noise but a flow of genuine things. A serious businessman does not waste his energy in useless talks. English Proverbs -AN IDLE BRAIN IS DEVIL’S WORKSHOP

Jose John November 30, 2015 No Comments
Proverb Expansion AN IDLE BRAIN IS DEVIL’S WORKSHOP If a room remains vacant no one cleans it and it is full of dust, insects, webs and rats. It has a vicious atmosphere. That is true of a man’s brain too. If it is not occupied by positive thoughts and is not busy in studying, writing, planning for life and the nation it is like that vacant room. Vicious forces would gradually occupy it and Satan would gain entry. He would leave the devil there to reign supreme. If a man’s brain is not busy making gainful programmes about himself, his profession, his family or the society or the nation, it surrenders before the devil. The devil invokes in him all that is vicious and evil how to be rich in a short time and he may be a part of the different scams going on in the country. He may think of becoming a member of a group of smugglers. If weak in sex he may start planning how to molest the girl in the neighbourhood. If he doesn’t think about his own fortune he is sure to think of the downfall of others. His brain becomes a workshop of debauchery, dishonesty and betrayal. Oh god don’t make anyone...
