Diwali, Holi, Duessehra, Christmas, Guruparav etc. are the some of the important festivals in India. Among these, Diwali is my favourite festival. Diwali means a row of lamps. It is an important hindu festival. It reminds us of the ideals of Rama. One this day, Rama, with his wife Sita and brother Lakshman, had returned to Ayodhya after an exile of fourteen years. People lighted lamps to welcome them. From then onwards, this festival is celebrated. Preparation for Diwali begins weeks in advance. Houses are whitewashed and decorated. New clothes are brought. Businessmen start new accounts on this day. Markets are decorated. People go to the market and buy utensil, sweets, toys, crackers etc. In the evening, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped. The houses are illuminated with earth lamps and electric bulbs. There is lighting everywhere. Children wear new clothes and burst crackers. Sweets and gifts are exchanged. Everybody is happy. Some foolish people gamble on this day. It is an evil practice. It should be stopped.
