Proverb Expansion AS YOU SOW, SO SHALL YOU REAP This is a proverb from the Bible. Man is responsible for the outcome of his actions. If the action is based on goodness the result is also good and if the action has been evil, the outcome also tends to be evil. Goodness is the child of good deeds and misfortune and calamities, the children of evil. If we do well and even if it doesn’t yield proper result all of a sudden, we can certainly expect absolute goodness out of it in future. This fact reminds us to check our actions, whenever they tend to be evil or harmful to others. In short goodness will always bear goodness in our life.
Proverb Expansion A DROWNING MAN WILL CATCH AT A STRAW A person is drowning, will desperately clutch even at a floating straw. The only thought that is in his mind is to catch at something that will save him. To him, it does not make any difference, between a log of wood and a straw. In a desperate situation, the person facing, will grab at any opportunity in the hope of solving it. To him, it does not matter if it is a small or a big chance. Just like the drowning man clutching a straw, the man facing a desperate situation will grab any opportunity irrespective of its worth. Desperation makes man frantic. A frantic person crosses all limits for solving his problem.
Proverb Expansion BLOOD IS THICKER THAN WATER Blood relationship is always found to be stronger and valuable than mere friendship formed through acquaintance. They have a strong bond of affection than all other relationships. Friends may be sincere and willing to help. But they have limits. Relatives like father, mother, brother and sister will stand with us risking even their lives. Even if friends are true and sincere, we cannot expect the greatest sacrifice from them. They give more importance to their own kith and kin. Even then true and sincere friendship should be regarded. The most unselfish service is often got from our kith and kin than from friendship formed through acquaintance.
Proverb Expansion BOOKS AND FRIENDS SHOULD BE FEW, BUT GOOD Friends are said to influence the character of a person. Similarly books too can affect the personality of an individual to a great extent. One is free to choose whatever he wants. There are good people and bad people. So one must take care to associate with good people if his character is to be refined. In a way, books also act as friends. If a person read a lot of books he will not be able to grasp anything worthwhile. In the case of friends also, if he tries to entertain a large number of friends he will not be able to form true and firm friendship with any of them. Too many books also might not help him to learn anything from them. Friends should also be chosen on the basis of character.
Proverb Expansion BURN NOT YOUR HOUSE TO FRIGHT THE MOUSE AWAY Mouse is a pest which infects houses and fields. Cats are also reared to get rid of mice. It is difficult to get rid of mice completely if they are many in number. If we try to bum down the house to get rid of the mice, we ourselves will be the losers. While it kills the mice, the fire will also destroy the house and our belongings. Likewise, it is unwise to beat great losses in order to avoid a small danger or difficult situation in our day to day life. In other words, it is foolish to go through great risks just for the sake of avoiding a minor one.

There are crooks that dress well and cheat others. They create an impression on the public by wearing trendy clothes. They also speak sweetly and convincingly. Good and great men are usually plainly dressed. They have no need to impress others by the clothes they wear. Good qualities and talents always show through the clothes irrespective of whether they are good looking or not. Many of the great world renowned personalities were simple men who used to dress plainly. If a man who has no real ability to dresses smartly. His traits will be clearly revealed. So it is really the goodness and moral strength in a man that matter. His qualities are infact the best dress he can wears.
Proverb Expansion THE BEST FISH SWIM NEAR THE BOTTOM It is always easy to catch the fish that swim near the surface of the water. But the best always remains at the bottom and hence they cannot be caught easily. The pain taken to catch such fish is always worthwhile. Likewise, the rarest of gems are usually found at the bottom of oceans. People usually are too lazy or reluctant to take enough pains and thereby achieve good results in life. Even if they do not yield good results overnight, they certainly will pay up in the long run. History is full of such examples which emphasize the fact that real success can only be achieved by putting in hard and sincere effort. A man must be prepared to work hard to get the real fruits of life.

This is because a bird can be comfortable only in a group of its land. This is the case with human beings also. Those with similar tastes and interests often form groups and associate with one another. In order to form a lasting friendship, people must have tastes and outlooks which they share in common. A person’s character can be assessed by the company he keeps. If he get associated in a circle of refined men, his capacity is also likely to be enhanced.
Proverb Expansion BETTER TO GET AN EGG TODAY THAN A HEN TOMORROW An opportunity that we get today may not be available tomorrow. If we set aside the chances at hand hoping to get bigger chances, we are liable to be getting rejected. So it is always wise to accept and utilize whatever is at hand than being over ambitious hoping to get bigger things tomorrow. Today is what counts, tomorrow may never come. If one is offered an egg with promises to give a hen later he should accept the egg instead of rejecting it in the hope of getting a hen later which is more valuable. It he rejects the egg and wait for the hen, the promised hen may not be available tomorrow. Thus he will lose both the egg and the hen.
Proverb Expansion BARKING DOGS SELDOM BITE Dogs are expected to bark and bite. They guard our homes from intruders. Whenever they see a stranger, they bark. There are dogs that bark too much. It is a fact that such dogs rarely bite. They only try to frighten people away by their loud bark. On the contrary, there are dogs that do not bark too much. Around us we find people who talk too much without meaning anything serious. They utter big threats, but are not capable of putting them into practice. Instead, people who remain quiet are to be watched. They believe more in practice than in mere talk. If they mean to do something, they would not waste time on unnecessary threats. They speak after they put into practice whatever they mean.

The mind constitution is such that it can be made to work for a long time. At the same time, proper relaxation is necessary for keeping it from getting overworked. An overworked mind losses all social spirit making the personality dull. A relaxed mind is could make wonders. It retrieves all its capacities for absorption of knowledge after proper recreation. Work and recreation in a balanced form is the proper way to keep the mind trim. This is very important in the case of children because it is the age when the personality of the child is being moulded. In short, work with no recreation makes us ill-tempered.
Proverb Expansion ALL THAT GLITTERS IS NOT GOLD Gold is a very valuable metal; it has an attractive glittering appearance. But it does not mean that everything which glitters like gold should be precious. There are things that look like gold and taking than on their face value is unwise. A port on may be good looking, having an attractive character, But ho may not poises any real ability or talent A man must be judged on the basis of his abilities and not on his external appearance. Goodness, humility and perfection could not be made out from external appearance. Like shining glass pieces which dazzle and glitter like diamonds, the appearance of men can be greatly misleading.

He towers over other animals in the shades of sentiments, emotions and suffers from tensions too. He is the only homosapien creature in the world using his mental faculty. Thus unlike other animals who have a tendency to keep them alive by securing food man does not live on bread alone. Gone are the days when man had to move from one area to the other in search of food. The stone age is far behind. The migrating tendency too has come to a standstill. Today man has settled in areas of abundance and has generally not to hanker after food for his sustenance. He has grown ambitious indifferent fields far above physical sustenance. A poet lives on the fancies that he creates. A scientist lives on the research that is a life line for him. An industrialist has an aura of production around him that sustains him. Proverb Expansion IF CHARACTER IS LOST ALL IS LOST There is an old saying ‘if wealth is lost nothing is lost, if health is lost something is lost. But if character is lost all is lost’. It is not a religious teaching. It is a universal maxim and stands true in all the countries all the ages. Although we worship Laxmi, the goddess of wealth every year yet all know it is not a stable factor. Wealth is an objective factor once lost it can be earned again. The Pandavas lost their whole kingdom, but regained it. Ups and downs are a common feature in business and industry. If you lose money people may sympathize with you. They won’t hate you. So in a way nothing is lost. So is true, to some extent, with health too. It is of course a subjective factor. An unhealthy person is a headache to his kins and to one’s ownself too.
