Terrorism : A Threat to Society

Terrorism is one of the gravest problems that the society faces today. It is an issue of global concern. The presence of terrorism can be felt across the globe. It is, today, a much debated issue in all the countries of the world-developing or developed. Terrorism is not a new phenomenon. But over the years terrorism like other avenues of life, has undergone tremendous changes. It has now become more lethal, more widespread and more difficult to control. Today it stands as a serious challenge before the civil society.

Terrorism has its presence everywhere ranging from Indonesia. Malaysia to Sudan. Somalia, Egypt, Nigeria, Peru, Chile. America to Ireland. Almost all the countries are directly or indirectly facing the problem of terrorism. It has sprung up everywhere. Terrorists are the greatest enemies of the society because they undermine its stability by creating chaotic conditions leading to mass killing, damage and destruction. Generally public places like airports, railway stations etc are their targets, but sometimes they shift their focus to some soft targets like schools, hospitals, trains and buses where security is lax and security forces are not very vigilant.

Every country has defined terrorism in its own way as per its own suitability. There is no universally accepted definition of terrorism. In fact, terrorism is an unlawful use of violence or threat of violence aiming to inculcate fear among the masses. It is a philosophy of violence which terrorists use to destabilize the economy of a country. In modern times terrorism is being used to deliberately create communal tensions, and disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of a targeted society or country. The impact of terrorism has three motives-religious interests, ethnic minority interests and economic interests. But the real issue is the land, the power to hold it and to get maximum benefit from it.

Terrorists groups today are well-equipped with state-of-the-art technologies. Terrorists are increasingly making use of bombs and explosives. In addition, indiscriminate firing, bombarding and hijacking are also used by them as a tool to terrorist the society. Nuclear terrorism and bio-terrorism are the ways of modern terrorism. Terrorists in their operation of activities are very brutal and cruel. They act cold-bloodedly without any consideration to kindness, ethics and morality. Their sole aim is to cause destruction and damage.

Terrorists today work under as part of global network. They have established contacts with groups in different countries and carry on their activities quiet collaboration with them. They offer training and finances to other groups. Sometimes terrorists activities are sponsored by bigger terrorist organizations. Ultimately whatever measures are taken, the conditions that give rise to terrorism has to be tackled efficiently.

Importance of Self Reliance

Self-reliance means developing the right skills and capabilities to do one’s activities without depending on outside support. Its essence is not to wait for the opportunity to knock at one’s door but to create opportunities for oneself by doing hard work and acquiring the qualities that are necessary to move ahead in life.

People who practice self-reliance are truly the masters of their own destiny. They never blame fate, unfit circumstances or find fault with the systems or the society. They make use of their own tools and use them with great skill and concentration, focusing mainly on their goal. Their success, achievement and creation bear the stamp of their personality. They are original in their ideas, innovative in their approach and become the torch-bearers of prosperity. They are always to achieve their objectives because they are resolute, single-minded and self-disciplined. They know their relative strengths and weaknesses and use up their energies in such a way that their weaknesses are not exposed to others. They execute their plans themselves and operate on their own modes.

Self-reliance is the shortest possible route to success. Lord Buddha once said. “You are both the friend and the enemy of yourself. The heaven and the hell lie within you. It is up to you to choose. You are your own lamp, guide and staff. Never depend on others. Be the maker of your destiny. Help yourself and the world will help you. These lines remind us of the time-tested adage, “God helps those who helps themselves”. The Almighty has given every human being two hands to work and a mind to distinguish between good and bad. Why should any one then try to walk on somebody else’s crutches?

It has also been found that those who develop the habit of depending on others lose their capabilities of doing even the smallest of things. This happens because their body become lethargic, their mind lazy and their muscles requiring rest all the time. Such people desire someone at their beck and call all the time to fetch or carry something for them. They get so used to asking for help for everything that they lose their confidence and are afraid of trying to do something themselves. They are not liked by anyone because they irritate others by asking for favours and needs for all the time. There is a direct relationship between self-reliance and success. Observing the way working of highly successful people shows us that they imbibed the habit of being self reliant at an early age.

Self-reliance is not and easy thing to gain. It needs some amount of great sacrifice. A great sense of discipline to follow the given or set schedule to perform those activities that demand much attention. Parents and other elders in the family, and teachers play a vital role in making children self-reliant. Self- reliance take a lot of dedicated hard worked and purposeful endeavour.

Happiness of Reading

Reading has been one of the popular hobbies from early time. Reading is a source of knowledge for some, while to others it provides pleasure. Some seek inspiration in it, at the same time it serves as a source of strength for a group of people. Reading stimulates the mind directly. Reading is to the mind is what food is to the body.

During reading our sense organs convey to the mind the feelings that arise from it. When such feelings are agreeable to mind, they serve as pleasure. They relieve us of our tension and boredom. They remove our worries and instill in us a renewed energy which immensely helps us in taking life with enthusiasm and vigour. Reading is possible only in the educational society. An uneducated society which does not have a script, can never think of the pleasures of reading. With the invention of the Brail script, reading for the blind became a realization and true blessing.

There are a lot of reading material for the discerning people which include stories, dramas, plays, poems, comedies, verses jokes, thrills, suspense, etc. the choice of reading material differs from person to person. Reading is an excellent form of recreation.

Reading provides pleasure of learning new things, new places, new persons. The accumulated knowledge of mankind is available in written and printed form. It is by reading that one can expose that vast hidden treasure of knowledge and experience and can benefit from it. Through reading one can learn many things. During an interview Lokmanya Tilak emphasized the importance of reading by saying that he was ready to reside even in hell if it could provide him with sufficient reading material and reading time. Reading grooms personality. It shapes character. The benefit of pleasure received from reading is immeasurable. The habit of reading should be encouraged right from the early childhood.

The modern era shows a declining interest in reading. The expansion of IT and growing TV culture revolutionized the interest and hobbies of people. They have opened up a whole new world, vivid, exciting and fascinating, before them. Prevailing social and political conditions are also responsible for this. However for men of good taste and purpose reading is always a rich source of immense pleasure.

Books provide good companionship, easily available, enlightened, dependable and lifelong. Reading dispels our thoughts of gloom and serves us as a source of comfort, hopefulness and patience. It brightens up darkness and adversity. Milton rightly said, ” A good book is precious life blood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured upon purpose to a life beyond life.” Francis bacon asserted that “ Reading makes a full man…”

Despite myriad means of entertainment and recreation, books continue to enjoy a prominent position. Books have been great sources of knowledge from times immemorial. Though in the present says a shift to new interests and preferences are evident, reading enjoys a unique and distinctive status of its own in our society.

Global Warming : Cause and Effects

Global warming is the greatest challenge facing our planet. It is in fact the increase in the temperature of the earth’s neon-surface air. It is the one of the most current and widely discussed phenomena. It has far reaching impact on bio-diversity and climatic conditions of the planet. Several recent trends demonstrate that global warming is directly its exercising impact on sea levels, melting of ice caps and worldwide climate changes. In short global warming represents a fundamental threat to all living things on earth.

Average global temperature rose considerably during the past century. The prevailing scientific view is that most of the temperature increase since mid-20^th century has been caused by increases in atmospheric greenhouse gas concentrations produced by human activity. Most scientists agree that the planet’s temperature has risen 0.5 degree Celsius since 1900 was the hottest year in the last century. Together with 1991, the years of 1983,1987,1988 and 1989 have been measured to be the warmest 6 years in the last one hundred years. The year 1991 was the second warmest year of the past century. The consequences of the rise in temperature is being felt all over the globe. The findings of scientific research done in this field reveal that the temperature of the earth is likely to rise from 1.4 degree Celsius to 5.8 degree Celsius within a period of hundred years. Unfortunately ,the imbalance which we have created between our life and earth is already showing the signs of disaster in the form of floods,cyclones,landslides,tsunami,drought, etc. if the imbalance continues to rise it would definitely lead to grave repercussions.

Carbon dioxide which is an important constituent of the environment is causing a warming effect on the earth’s surface. It increases the evaporation of water into the atmosphere. Since water vapour itself is a greenhouse gas. This cause still more warming. The warming causes more water vapour to be evaporated. The Carbon dioxide level is expected to rise in future due to ongoing burning of fossil fuels and land use change. The rate of rise will depend largely on certain economic, sociological, technological and natural developments. Other gases such as methane, CFCs, nitrous oxide, troposphere ozone are also responsible for global warming. Increases in all these gases are due to explosive population growth, increased industrial expansion, technological advancement, deforestation, growing urbanization etc.

Global warming is great threat to flora and fauna of the earth. A large number of species may become extinct. The expanse of desert would increase. Low rainfall and rising temperature would add to the intensity and frequency of dust storms. This in turn will immensely affect the quality of agricultural land, ultimately causing adverse effect on agricultural produce. It would have far-reaching socio-economic impact also.

Forestation can be of great help for the reduction of global warming. Planting more trees and reducing timber cuts worldwide will help restore the imbalance to a great extent. And we must follow the environmental policy of “reduce, reuse, recycle”, ie, promoting the reuse of anything. The use of fuel-efficient vehicles should be promoted. And every individual should be aware of the importance of protecting the environment. Besides eco-friendly technologies must be promoted.

Exercises – A Boon to Health

Then we talk of exercises, staying fit, the image of a slim person immediately comes to mind. We all view staying fit as staying thin, but this is not necessarily true. Many young women and now, with the advent of the modern age, even men are obsessed with staying thin, good looking as they term it. A person can be fit even though he or she may seem obese to the rest of the world.

Exercise is the key to keeping oneself fit. Exercise is not necessarily standing in one place and moving your arms and legs as one used to do in school. One can incorporate exercise into or along with any activity one enjoys. Dancing is an exercise, provided that the pace is fast, climbing upstairs is another way to reduce or to come back to the earlier level of fitness, but overdoing it can cause your knees to pain.

Exercise must be combined with a proper diet. Regular exercise , is not a license to unhealthy eating habits. At times one does indulge in a binge but it should be once in a while only. One’s diet should be well packaged with proteins, carbohydrates as well as minerals. Yoga has become a fancy to stay fit these days. It has a rich and famous clientele outside of India, and now, thanks to various TV channels, it is becoming quite popular in the country of its origin. Better late than never. Exercise is for fitness, it is not in an order to create an appetite.

We eat in order that we live, we do not live to eat. Fast food is the single biggest cause for making people unhealthy or unfit. Keeping fit and healthy, is all in the mind, if you believe that keeping fit is necessary for better living only then can you succeed in the battle of good health. Those obsessed with healthy skin, keeping fit keeps your skin smooth, firm and also clear and glowing. Our skin has its own way of showing off when it is in good.

Drug Abuse and the Youth

Since the youth are the future citizens of India, they should be brought up and protected with the utmost care. Nowadays young people are very much independent and are not amenable to the reasonable, logical pleas of their parents, teachers and elders to walk past in the right direction.

As young people are carefree they get little chance of knowing the implications of the moral values of life. They think they can do anything they like and they are not bound by ethical rules and regulations. In these days, except a few, many students take to evil ways. Especially the youth who stay in hostels for a long time develop all kinds of bad habits and get themselves spoiled. Most of the youngsters who stay in lodges are exposed to bad habits like smoking, drinking and sexual relationship with strangers. Even a disciplined boy turns to evil ways because of his association with bad boys.

Getting addicted to drugs is drugs is most dangerous. We believe that a person in hallucination experiences the pleasure of hearing a song from his inner being. He is totally in the grip of an illusion. It is true that a person who knowingly or unknowingly gets the taste of a drug is drawn to it and his addiction to it gradually becomes stronger and stronger making him a slave to drugs. All bad habits like addiction to liquor, drugs or seeking the company of harlots, enslaves one, and is apt to be in its grip for ever.

In many of the western countries addiction to drugs especially among the youth has caught on like wild fire and this trend forebodes disaster to the society. Drug-addiction strikes at the root of discipline of the youth misguiding them, leading them astray and make them muddle-headed.Drug-addicts have a tendency to add more and more persons to their company and they desire that others too should become victims of drug addiction.

The Central as well as the State Governments have established counseling and treatment centers for drug and liquor addicts. There are some private counseling and treatment centers for drug and liquor addicts all over the country. The youth should be advised to mould themselves into noble, responsible citizens to enable them to shoulder the responsibilities of the nation. They have to be warned and even castigated for their misguided enthusiasm in evil habits which would slowly and steadily lead them to their doom.

The youth of our country are tomorrow’s citizens and in this world of violence, mutual bitterness and deceit, they should be made to understand that they are the torchbearers of wisdom and discipline. The future of the nation is in their hands.

Cloning – Ethical or Not?

Ever since sheep- Dolly was cloned in 1997, a new field of controversy had been flung open-whether this newly acquired technology of cloning is beneficial or detrimental to human race. It was not by accident that Dolly was cloned. It took nearly about 76 nuclear transfer procedures by a Scottish scientist at the Roslin Institute in order to create the first cloned animal ever. The success rate of reproductive cloning still remains doubtful at the present moment because the dangers of reproductive cloning are many. Besides many of the clones thus produced suffer from major abnormalities, for instance, deformation of an organ or its absence. Research has shown that out of all the attempts on reproductive cloning. 90% of them are fail to produce even one viable offspring. Early human cloning experiments are thus at a big stake because they will be more prone to similar abnormalities found in animal clones. These abnormalities found in animal clones. These abnormalities might result into further medical complications as miscarriages, abortions, birth of offspring with highly deformed organs or abnormal features. Moreover, human cloning is believed to be unethical or immoral.

Another impediment that puts a question mark on reproductive cloning is the uncertainty on the kind of mental development, the clone will have. The mental development of an animal clone produced is of little significance but it acquires important dimensions when it comes to human cloning. Reproductive cloning might put great physiological burdens. Clones raised under different circumstances and environments will turn out to be different in their personalities. Infinite other uncertainties related to the mental development of the offspring, the inefficiency to develop healthy and normal human clones along with many other dangers for the present moment makes human cloning unethical, immoral and even unscientific. It is morally unacceptable because it converts a natural and sacred process of human procreation into a mechanized and beastly human manufacturing industry. The concept is so new and unexplored that the dangers of its processes are ethical issues that are unresolved. Thus, till these issues are resolved, it is wise to ban the dangerous attempts to clone humans.

On the other hand, therapeutic cloning, which is often confused with reproductive cloning, does not attempt to create an offspring or the replica of progenitor, in fact, in this process, vital stem cells are taken from human embryos, which are in turn used to generate tissues and organs which are again used for transplantation. The ultimate goal is this to treat various kinds of heart diseases. Alzheimer’s disease and it is helpful even in fighting cancer. Reproductive cloning is used for the conception of an offspring which possesses certain desired characteristics of the progenitor is much shrouded in controversy. Therapeutic cloning has a much better position to take.

Cloning thus as a new branch of knowledge and biotechnology is still in its primary stage. It will have to be explored more deeply and tested more rigorously to facilitate it to become acceptable.

Child Labour in India Essay Writing Topics

Child labour is one of the challenging problems in India. The practice of engaging young children in various sectors of labour is evident. It is astonishing to note that there is staggering figure between 60 and 115 million working children in India perhaps the highest number in the world. It is poverty that draws a child to earn money to support the needs of his family. Though it is prevalent in most parts of the country, the problem is acute for the socio-economically weaker states like UP, Bihar, Orissa, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Madhyapradesh and North-eastern states. Besides poverty, lack of education and accessible sources of credit forces poor parents to engage their children in child labour. India is forced to take up the challenge of providing basic amenities to these children.

It is seen that more than 85 percent of child labour is in the country’s rural areas, working in agricultural activities, such as farming, livestock rearing, forestry and fisheries. Children also develop skills in certain traditional crafts. These children contribute greatly to the national income.

The Government of India is keen to eradicate child labour. India’s unequivocal commitment to the cause of children is well expressed in constitutional provisions, legislations, policies and programmes. The Directive Principle of State Policy and Fundamental Rights reveal the commitment of the Government. Besides, India is also a party to the UN Declaration on the Rights of the child, 1959. India adopted the National Policy on children in 1974. India also ratified on December 2, 1992, the Convention on the Rights of the Child of 1990. This ratification implies that India will ensure wide awareness about issues relating to children. India is also a signatory to the World Development of Children.

Child labour is a great socio-economic problem. Children essentially work to maintain the economic level of households, either in the form of work for wages, or help in household enterprises, or in household chores. In all the activities the basic objective is to provide the family financial support. In some cases, it has been found that a child’s income accounted for between 34 and 37 per cent of the total income of the household.

The policies and programmes of the government conform to its commitment which focuses on the eradication of child labour. Though enforcement is in existence, it has failed to be of much effort. Measures have to be initiated in a proper manner by the government in order to achieve the goal of eradication of child labour.
